A. (2020)\, Beyond sticky notes \n\nIn the 21st century\, the boundaries of design as a discipline have expanded\, evolving from a siloed field into a collaborative and multidisciplinary practice. Design schools now prepare students not only to be makers but also to become co-creators\, facilitators\, and systems thinkers. Designers are equipped with adaptable ways of thinking that can be applied across diverse roles and sectors—from grassroots community work to corporate environments. \nThis evolution positions designers to collaborate meaningfully with communities\, empowering them to collectively author their futures. However\, co-design is not without its challenges. Its practice varies significantly depending on the organizational context\, requiring adaptability and sensitivity to different dynamics. \nThis talk will explore the broader disciplinary challenges of co-design\, drawing from the speaker’s experiences—from working closely with communities to navigating the transition into corporate spaces and addressing: \n\nThe real-world challenges of practicing co-design approaches.\nHow designers and community-centered practitioners can celebrate shared knowledge without being extractive.\nHow we\, as designers\, can bring our expertise\, skills\, and commitment to co-design into diverse organizational contexts\, particularly in corporate environments.\n\n  \nAbout Monisha Raju: \nMonisha is a graduate student in the Strategic Design and Management Program. She is a trained architect with experience working with multidisciplinary design practices in India. Her work is at the intersection of contextually sensitive design\, cultural history\, and community engagement. She has designed and worked on projects ranging from museum experiences to housing for elderly communities\, with a strong focus on sustainable materials and thoughtful design. She has also explored the work–live relationships of communities involved in traditional crafts in India\, aiming to understand and support the systems that sustain these practices. Outside of her academic and professional work\, Monisha is drawn to hands-on artistic practices. She is skilled in painting with different mediums\, enjoys visiting museums\, organizing and curating workshops. Lately\, she enjoys running through New York City’s neighborhoods\, drawing inspiration from its layered stories. \nAbout Gamar Markarian: \nGamar Markarian is a multidisciplinary designer\, strategist\, and visual storyteller with over 17 years of experience\, specializing in planetary-centered design\, systems thinking\, and community engagement. As a design strategist\, she believes creativity thrives through collective effort and has spent 8 years with Philadelphia Mural Arts\, facilitating community-driven collaborative projects. Gamar values inclusivity and collaboration\, weaving storytelling into her work to connect people\, ideas\, and places. She also teaches in the Strategic Design and Management (BBA) program at Parsons The New School for Design\, where she coordinates the Design Research 1: Methods course. Gamar herself is a graduate of the MS in Design and Urban Ecologies at Parsons. Outside of work\, she celebrates her heritage through cooking and finds joy in creating new friendships and meaningful connections. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, May 29\, 2025\n12:30 – 1 pm ET / 9:30 – 10 am PT\nVirtual Lightning Talk\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nFree for Students\, Members & Partners(see your email for the promo code)!$5 General Admission. (Note\, the rain date has moved from Thursday\, May 8\, from 3-5pm ET to Friday\, May 9\, from 3-5pm ET.) \nJoin Hacin President and Creative Director\, David Hacin\, FAIA\, on a walking tour through his home neighborhood that will highlight classic South End moments such as the bow-front townhouses of Union Park and the vibrant thoroughfare of Tremont Street\, as well as the up and coming SoWa Art and Design District (with nods to the firm’s various projects from the past three decades along the way). The tour will last approximately two hours with a networking session at Tatte on Harrison Avenue to start and ending at the Boston Center for the Arts. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. \nThe South End has a long history of reinventing itself. Comprised of mostly marshland during the time of Boston’s founding\, the neighborhood was filled in in the mid-1800s and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Most recently\, its transformation in the last thirty years has changed it from a neighborhood trapped in a frustrating cycle of neglect and disinvestment to one of the most vibrant and beloved parts of Boston\, with a resonant architectural character and an effective process of incremental urbanism. \nArchitecture and design firm Hacin has long called the South End its home and the firm’s extensive body of work in the neighborhood includes townhouses and historic renovations\, restaurants\, a public park\, a community garden\, hundreds of housing units across the spectrum of affordable and luxury\, and a non-profit headquarters. Over the studio’s thirty-year history\, Hacin has demonstrated a commitment to the community and has been grateful to play a part in the area’s current success. \nField Trips are a benefit of membership in the Design Impact Society and Corporate + Academic Membership. Individual+ Members register for $10\, Access Members register for $13 and not-yet-Members register for $15. Student Members register for FREE on a limited\, first-come\, first-served basis. \n  \nAbout David Hacin: \nDavid J. Hacin\, FAIA is the Founding Principal and Creative Director of Hacin\, an interdisciplinary architecture and design firm founded in Boston in 1993. \nThe son of an architect and born in Geneva\, Switzerland\, David received his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Princeton University summa cum laude and his Masters of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design with distinction. David has served on the Northeastern University School of Architecture Advisory Board and has engaged a guest critic and lecturer at design schools across the country\, such as Northeastern University\, Harvard University\, MIT\, the University of Virginia\, Kansas State University\, and the Boston Architectural College. \nDavid has participated as a member of numerous design juries and panels\, given a TedX talk\, and guest-edited the journal ArchitectureBoston. He has led the firm in instructing graduate architectural design studios in 2018 and 2022 at Roger Williams University’s Cummings School of Architecture. David has served for more than twenty years as a Mayoral appointee to the Boston Civic Design Commission\, the City of Boston’s design review panel for significant projects that impact the public realm. Additionally\, David is an active volunteer on behalf of several community\, professional and non-profit organizations\, including the Boston Society of Architects\, the Design Industry Groups of Massachusetts\, Historic Boston Inc.\, and the Boston Center for the Arts\, where he served as the Board Chair during a pivotal time of the organization’s celebrated rejuvenation. When not in the studio\, David and his husband\, Tim\, can be found road-tripping around New England with their indomitable miniature schnauzer\, Walter. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, May 1\, 2025\n3 – 5 pm ET\n \n \n \n \n \n Registration is required. \n \n Register Now\n \n \n \n \n \n Design Impact Society\, Corporate + Academic Partners\, and Members will receive a promo code for free and discounted tickets. Yet\, the fashion industry—driven by mass production and seasonal trends—often prioritizes form over function\, making it difficult for individuals with disabilities to find clothing that is both stylish and accessible. While adaptive clothing exists\, the current options remain limited\, highlighting the need for a more inclusive approach to fashion design. \nThis talk will explore how designers can integrate inclusive design principles to create garments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional\, comfortable\, and empowering for all wearers. Through the lens of bridal wear\, we’ll examine the challenges individuals with disabilities face when shopping for significant life events and how the industry can better meet their needs. \nThe conversation will delve into: \n\nHow fashion brands can integrate inclusivity from the start rather than as an afterthought.\nThe role of technology and innovation in advancing adaptive fashion.\nHow store layouts and dressing rooms can be redesigned for greater accessibility.\nHow bridal designers can ensure gowns and suits accommodate different mobility and sensory needs.\n\n  \nAbout Maanya Lakhiani:\n \nMaanya Lakhiani is a strategic thinker with a passion for brand direction\, marketing\, and luxury fashion. Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Strategic Design and Management at Parsons School of Design\, she has spearheaded projects that live in the intersection of business\, creativity\, and consumer insights. Beyond her professional aspirations\, Maanya is an advocate for networking and industry engagement. Recognizing a gap in resources for fashion business students at Parsons\, she is working to establish a fashion business society to facilitate networking events\, industry talks\, and career support. Having grown up in Dubai and India\, Maanya brings a global perspective to her work\, seamlessly blending diverse cultural influences with a keen eye for trends. \nAbout Katie Horan:\n \nKatie Horan is the founder of All Bodies\, All Brides\, a company providing accessibility training to bridal stores\, seamstresses\, and wedding dress designers in the pursuit of disability justice. With 6 years of bridal experience and a lifelong commitment to disability advocacy\, she is reshaping the fashion industry’s perspective to be better prepared to serve people with disabilities in a compassionate\, inclusive manner. When she isn’t working with bridal teams or sketching adaptive wedding dresses\, she is an undergraduate in the Department of Religion at Princeton University\, considering how people with intellectual and developmental disabilities navigate religious spaces\, develop community\, and conceptualize God. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Friday\, April 25\, 2025\n12:30 – 1 pm ET / 9:30 – 10 am PT\nVirtual Lightning Talk\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nFree for Students\, Members & Partners\n(see your email for the promo code)!\n$5 General Admission. Meet Board and Council members Hilary Olson\, Alan Scott\, and Julie Taraska at the Burnside Trolley Building (2705 E Burnside St\, Portland\, OR 97214) at 8am PT. The ride will begin at 8:10am PT. \nPortland’s rich industrial history comes to life on the Central Eastside\, a warehouse district where a new generation of craftspeople work in reclaimed ateliers and street artists color walls with murals. We’ll embark from the historic Burnside Trolley Building\, where the echoes of Portland’s early streetcar era still resonate. Our first stop takes us to the West Ankeny Car Barns Bay E / Burnside Trolley Building\, the former streetcar carbarn and vital hub for Portland’s bustling transit network. We’ll pedal past architectural gems like the Coca Cola Bottling Headquarters\, the Pepsi arch from the former Pepsi Cola Bottling Plant\, and the iconic Jantzen Buildings\, established in 1916. (See the complete list of stops here). \nAdults of all biking abilities are encouraged to join us\, provided they can comfortably ride approximately 3-5 miles. The ride will predominantly follow greenways and quiet side streets\, ensuring a relaxed pace with minimal elevation changes. \nWe will end at Stumptown Coffee Roasters (3356 SE Belmont St) where you are welcome to join Hilary\, Julie\, and Alan for a cup of coffee to learn more about CoDesign Collaborative’s mission\, programming\, and ways to get more involved. \nThis Community Meetup is part of Pedalpalooza\, an annual festival in metro Portland\, Oregon.
